Sebastian Flaig (Percussion)

Freiburg born Sebastian Flaig studied ethnical percussion and jazz drumset and composition at the University for Music in Leipzig.

 

In order to deepen his knowledge about oriental percussion he lived in Istanbul for one year and studied with different masters such as the Darabuka virtuoso Misirli Ahmet.  

 

Additionally he learned Persian percussion from Behnam Samani and Majid Khaladj.

 

His stylistic spectrum covers a wide range from oriental music to Jazz up to early music and is expressed in different ensembles and in collaboration with different artists such as the Taner Akyol Trio, Maya Youssef, Pain Perdu, Kalhor Flaig duo, Susan Weinert, Ensemble Resonanz, Lauttencompagney Berlin, Musikwerkstatt Köln, Mysteries of Bulgarian voices feat. Lisa Gerard  and others... in 2017 the CD " Syrian dreams" by Maya Youssef was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

In 2020 the CD-recording From afar by Misagh Joolaee which exploits the technical, rhythmical and tonal possibilities of the Persian Kamancheh with percussion accompaniment was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

 

Sebastian Flaig performed as a soloist with the State Orchestra Braunschweig, the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and the Middle Saxony Philharmonic Orchestra and furthermore appeared in different dance and theater productions such as the Komische Oper. He was the artistic and musical director at the State Theater Freibug, Theater Erlangen, Bauhaus Dessau....in the field of contemporary music he premiered as a soloist works by composers such as Ali Gorji, Taner Akyol, Volker Staub, Chen Zheng-Wen

 

He composed music for documentaries and plays and toured in Libanon, Syria, Turkey, Bulgaria, South America ...
