PrELUDE: OF Foreign Lands and people

The House of Culture Freiburg is extremely pleased to announce that fabulous pianist Mengyi Yang will fill the wonderful concert venue in the Black Forest near Freiburg for the first time with magnificient tones by Schumann and Chopin and will put the audience into reverie and melancholy in the truest sense of the word.

Of Foreign Lands and Peoplethis idea implemented into the first piece of the cycle Scenes of Childhood by Schumann makes us reflecting its meaning. Isn´t that picture in fact to be comprehended as characterisation of music being freed from space and time rather than superficial travel into foreign lands? Couldn´t it be the case that the hidden B-A-C-H motif which is secretly embedded into that first piece of the series in an tremendously sophisticated manner is evidence of a deeper intention of the composer reflecting the need to express an infinite perspective of music being weaved into tones. Tones that once were versed in foreign lands and times by the omnipresent master of that afore-mentioed motif: the poet speaks?

That master who preluding throug all 24 keys of the diatonic scale and versing with high density of motifs and themes fired Frédéric Chopin´s imagination to create one the of most important monuments of romantic literature: the 24 Préludes, Op. 28.

Being characterised by a steady tenseness between thematic and motif-related reduction to the essence of the music as learned from the master, eruptive outbursts and lyrical reverie the Préludes portray an image of an inwardly disrupted soulscape which opens the door for the further development of piano music up until the post-romantic era. A soulscape whose absence would have hindered great followers' prelude works such as preludes by Alexander Scriabin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Claude Débussy and Dmitri Shostakovich in undergoing maturation and refining.

We are pleased to be able to fill those thoughts with music on Saturday, 17th August 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the House of Culture Freiburg  and hopefully to find answers to the afore-mentioned, very difficult questions.
