I am a woman,

no more

and no less!

We will present a poetic-literary concert with poems by the most important Palestinian lyricist and poet Mahmoud Darwish and contemporary Persian (love) poems by Forough Farrokhzad, together with free improvisation on the Iranian bowed violin Kamancheh and the Arabian short-neck lute Oud.

It is an important concern of the Haus der Kultur Freiburg to create new spaces for experiencing and creating art by bringing together performers from different cultures and backgrounds.

On one hand the Basel based double bass player and literature connoisseur Christian Sutter as reader of the touching and freedom striving poems of Darwisch and Farrokhzad. On the other hand the virtuoso performers Misagh Joolaee (Iranian bowed violin “Kamantsche”) and Bakr Khleifi (Arabian short-neck lute “Oud”). Together they are three artists who mutually inspire each other and let word and sound merge into a unique symbiosis.

In the face of upsetting events in the world and especially in Iran, the poems of the most important Iranian poet of modern times, Forugh Farrokhzad, are more relevant than ever. She manages to break down traditional role models of men and women and tears apart the humiliation of women in today's Iran with poignancy.

Considering the irrepressible striving for freedom in this poetry, it is not surprising that the majority of these poems by Farrokhzad have been banned in Iran.

All the more reason for the Haus der Kultur to give these words space in a free society and to achieve an intense symbiosis with freely improvised music.

The words as well as the music will blossom thanks to the different facets that each of the participants brings to the table, both artistically and in terms of their respective backgrounds. These facets will become a mutual source of inspiration in the context of this poetic concert.
